Progressive Care Unit (PCU) – Registered Nurse

Location: Lexington, KY

Shift: 3rd shift, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM, three 12-hour shifts per week

Contract Duration: 13 weeks

Start Date: November 30, 2026

About the Role

The facility's progressive care unit serves patients who require closer monitoring than general medical-surgical floors but are not at ICU acuity. You'll care for moderate-acuity patients transitioning from critical care, those at risk of clinical deterioration, and patients on continuous cardiac monitoring. This is an ideal role if you thrive in a step-down environment that balances independent nursing judgment with collaborative interdisciplinary teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

  • Continuously monitor cardiac rhythms and vital signs; recognize and respond promptly to changes in patient condition
  • Assess patients transitioning from ICU and manage moderate clinical complexity
  • Administer medications, including select IV drips, per physician orders
  • Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary team on individualized care plans
  • Respond to rapid response and code interventions as needed
  • Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatments, and recovery expectations
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation of assessments and interventions
  • Manage a typical patient load of 3–4 patients per shift
  • Uphold infection control and fall prevention protocols

Requirements

  • Active, unrestricted RN license in Kentucky (or compact license)
  • ADN or ASN minimum; BSN preferred
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • 1+ years of PCU or step-down experience
  • Proficiency with telemetry monitoring and moderate-acuity patient management

Preferred

  • PCCN (Progressive Care Certified Nurse)
  • Cardiac nursing experience

What We're Looking For

Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills, the ability to prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment, and excellent communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams. You'll bring empathy, adaptability, and a commitment to evidence-based practice.
