Stepdown / PCU – Registered Nurse
Council Bluffs, IA | 12-Hour Nights | 18-Week Contract
This fast-paced Stepdown/PCU unit manages a high-acuity patient population including heart failure, atrial fibrillation, respiratory distress, and stroke. The pace is driven by frequent admits and discharges, and the ideal candidate thrives in a team-oriented environment.
Shift & Schedule
- 12-hour nights; shift times 6:30 PM–7:00 AM or 7:30 PM–7:00 AM (cyclic scheduling)
- Every other weekend required
- One major and one minor holiday per contract
Clinical Responsibilities
- Titrate vasoactive and cardiac drips (Cardizem, amiodarone, nitroglycerin)
- Independently read and interpret telemetry strips
- Troubleshoot CPAP and basic respiratory therapy equipment
- Float to ICU may be required for appropriately experienced nurses
Unit Support
- Charge nurse on every shift (takes full patient assignment)
- Patient care techs available on the unit
Guaranteed Hours: 36 per week
Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
Orientation: One 12-hour department-specific shift; includes an open-book skills exam (90% passing score required)
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver's license required at submittal (used to verify 50-mile radius compliance)
- Artificial nails are not permitted in patient care areas
- Candidates must not have worked (full-time, part-time, or PRN) at any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility within the past year
- All requested time off must be submitted upfront; no additional RTO will be approved after submission
