Emergency Department — Travel RN
Bakersfield, CA | 13-Week Contract | 3 × 12-Hour Shifts
Shift & Schedule
Mid/evening starts (1 PM), rotating nights. Every other weekend required (Fri/Sat for nights). Schedules are built in 4-week blocks — open availability is required; PRN scheduling is not accommodated. This must be the candidate's primary position.
Unit Overview
A fast-paced Emergency Department serving a high volume of patients — approximately 85–115 per day. The patient population includes a notable proportion of correctional patients (accompanied by an officer), as well as a higher percentage of homeless and indigent patients. Pediatric volume is lower here. Cardiac patients are stabilized and transferred; all OB cases are also transferred off-site.
Required Certifications
- BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS
Clinical Support
- Shift manager and resource nurse on duty
- ED Techs (EMT-trained or cross-trained aides)
- Respiratory therapy and pharmacy available 24/7
- Ventilator management required
- Intensivist/hospitalist coverage in-house; ER uses MDs only
- No dedicated IV team
Float & Orientation
Floating may occur between two campuses located approximately 6.5 miles apart — both mid-shift and pre-shift (with at least 2 hours' notice). Orientation includes 2 shifts at the primary campus and 1 shift at the secondary campus.
Additional Requirements
- Scrubs: Navy blue only (jacket and undershirt must also be navy, white, or black)
- Weekend shifts: 4 per 4-week schedule
- Holidays: 1 major, 1 minor
- Guaranteed hours: 36/week
- Strong teamwork orientation essential
