Pre-Op RN Position
Position Overview
Join a dynamic pre-operative nursing team in a small department where you'll care for patients across general surgery, gynecology, endoscopy, and specialty procedures. You'll float between two nearby campuses (16 minutes apart) as needed and may extend coverage to Phase 2 recovery.
Clinical Scope
You'll prepare patients for procedures including cholecystectomies, appendectomies, hernia repairs, mastectomies, hysterectomies, colonoscopies, EGDs, and robotic-assisted cases. Patient volume ranges from 5–30 cases daily. The unit handles minimal trauma, with most trauma cases referred to the Bryan campus.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preoperative assessments and patient preparation
- Initiate IV access and perform EKGs (training provided)
- Collaborate with a working charge nurse who carries patient assignments
- Support Phase 2 recovery as assigned
- May precept traveling or new RN staff
Requirements
- Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications
- Dysrhythmia competency (must score 83% before contract start; three attempts allowed)
- Acute preoperative experience preferred but not required
- Comfortable with first-time travelers and willing to learn new skills
- Able to respond to call within 30 minutes
Schedule
- Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM–2:30 PM (8-hour shifts)
- 1 weekend per month; 24-hour call shifts (self-sign-up flexibility available)
- 40 guaranteed hours per week
- 6-week contract
Onboarding
1–2 days of preceptor-led orientation.
What to Know
Navy blue scrubs. Hospital may cancel up to 4 shifts per 13-week assignment. Call-outs are strongly discouraged. No nurse aides on unit; RNs manage full patient care responsibilities.
