Surgical ICU Nurse – 12-Hour Days
Position Overview
The facility's Surgical ICU is a high-acuity unit focused on postoperative recovery. You'll care for patients following vascular procedures, carotid endarterectomies, femoral-popliteal bypasses, EVARs, laparotomies, and thoracic surgeries. This role offers the opportunity to work with advanced therapies including CRRT and ECMO, and to perform common procedures such as line placements.
Shift & Schedule
- 12-hour day shifts, 6:45 AM start with bedside report
- Every other weekend requirement
- Rotate holidays with core staff
- 4-week schedules posted in advance
- Self-scheduling available with manager balancing
- Overtime and extra shifts available
- 36 guaranteed hours per week
Clinical Environment
- Hospitalist or Intensivist in-house coverage
- 24/7 respiratory therapy and pharmacy support
- Telemetry monitoring and ventilator management required
- Charge nurse role available (typically no patient assignment, break relief duties)
- Nurse aides present as safety attendants
Requirements
- Current RN license
- BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), and NIHSS certifications
- Two professional references from your specialty: one within 12 months, one within 3 years
- Government-issued ID required at contract signing
- DYS exam completion required within 24–48 hours of hiring (two attempts allowed)
- Background experience with surgical patients required
Additional Details
- Navy scrubs required (undershirts: navy, white, or black)
- Float to other Sacramento-area facilities; mid-shift floats are rare
- 1–2 days floor-specific orientation with preceptor
- 14-week contract
