Nurse Shift Manager (NSM) — Labor & Delivery | Bakersfield, CA
13-Week Contract | 12-Hour Nights | 36 Guaranteed Hours/Week
This is a Nurse Shift Manager position requiring strong charge nurse experience in a high-volume, high-acuity OB setting. The unit manages the full continuum of women's health care — Labor & Delivery, recovery, postpartum, antepartum, and women's health overflow — and handles approximately 250 births per month.
Clinical Scope
- High-risk OB, including preeclampsia management, Pitocin protocols, and maternal mental health screenings
- Transfers out for major maternal cardiac complications or neonates requiring surgery
- Self-circulating nurses in OR for C-sections
- NICU charge nurse and respiratory therapy attend all high-risk deliveries
- Strong evidence-based practice culture: 100% chart audits, low-risk primary C-section reduction initiatives, no elective deliveries prior to 39 weeks
- Baby-friendly unit with immediate skin-to-skin and early breastfeeding initiation
Schedule & Float Requirements
- 12-hour nights, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
- Every other weekend (approximately four weekend shifts per cycle)
- Must work one major and one minor holiday
- All nurses rotate through L&D, postpartum, C-section, and women's health
- Standby (on-call) possible; 30-minute response time if called in
Requirements
- BLS, ACLS, NRP, AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring — all required
- Ability to independently start IVs
- Strong charge/leadership experience essential
- Navy blue scrubs required daily; L&D scrubs provided on-unit
Orientation
- Three-shift baseline unit orientation
- Online OB training module required
- Hands-on training with perinatology safety specialists
Support Services
- OB/anesthesia, respiratory therapy, and pharmacy available 24/7
- OB techs provide scrub support
