Progressive Care Unit (PCU) — Travel RN
Hermitage, TN | Days | 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM | 13-Week Contract
This PCU assignment places you in a fast-paced, high-acuity step-down environment caring for cardiac, stroke, and post-procedural patients. The unit is well-supported by nursing techs and is known for strong teamwork and a collaborative culture — most travelers choose to extend after their first assignment.
Shift & Schedule
- Three 12-hour day shifts per week (36 guaranteed hours)
- Every other weekend required
- Self-scheduling model; schedules posted 4 weeks out
Clinical Scope
The unit manages a diverse patient population requiring close monitoring and hands-on intervention, including:
- Cardiac drips, heparin drips, and insulin drips
- EKG rhythm interpretation
- Stroke and post-cardiac catheterization care
- Peritoneal dialysis (preferred experience)
- BiPAP and high-flow oxygen management
- Thoracentesis, paracentesis, and chest tube insertions
- Dobhoff/NG tube insertions and tube feeding management
- Central line dressing changes and wound vac troubleshooting
Float Requirements
Candidates may float between PCU units or to med-surg floors as needed.
Required Certifications
- BLS
- ACLS
Must-Have Skills
- Critical thinking and EKG rhythm interpretation
- Experience with cardiac, heparin, and insulin drips
- Peripheral IV proficiency
- Familiarity with multiple oxygen delivery systems
