Certified Surgical First Assist

Location: Paducah, KY

Contract Duration: 26 weeks | Start Date: October 15, 2026

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8-hour day shifts (6:00 AM–2:30 PM) | Call every other day and every other weekend

About the Role

The facility is seeking a Certified Surgical First Assist to serve as the surgeon's chief assistant in the operating room. You'll provide direct surgical support across a range of operative procedures, including cardiothoracic cases. Working under surgeon supervision, you'll manage hemostasis, tissue handling, suturing, and wound closure while maintaining sterile technique and ensuring optimal surgical flow.

Key Responsibilities

• First assist during surgical procedures; retract, expose, and manipulate tissue for visualization
• Perform hemostasis, apply ligating clips and hemostatic agents, and close wound layers
• Assist with patient positioning, prepping, and draping
• Harvest saphenous veins (open and endoscopic) following approved training
• Maintain sterile field throughout all cases
• Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia, and OR staff to support procedural flow
• Alert the team to any risks or deviations from standard protocols
• Document surgical assistance and findings per facility standards
• Perform post-case instrument cleaning and point-of-use preparation

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Surgical First Assisting program
• CSFA (Certified Surgical First Assistant) certification by NBSTSA — required
• BLS certification — required
• 1+ years surgical first assist experience (in addition to surgical tech experience)
• Advanced knowledge of surgical anatomy and technique
• Ability to work call every other day and every other weekend

Preferred

• 6–12 months prior experience as a surgical first assistant
