Night Shift RN – Medical-Surgical/Orthopedics

Shift Details

• 12-hour nights (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
• Self-scheduling with every third weekend required (Friday and Saturday count as weekends)
• 36 guaranteed hours per week
• 13-week contract

Unit Overview

The medical-surgical/orthopedic unit manages a diverse patient population including post-operative orthopedic cases (total knee/hip replacements, shoulder repairs), fracture management, and acute medical conditions such as COPD, sepsis, ia, CHF, and acute respiratory distress. You'll also care for patients with dementia, oncology diagnoses, wound care needs, and those with substance use and mental health conditions.

Clinical Scope

• No drip titration required; RNs administer set-rate medications (heparin, IV antibiotics, antithrombics, narcotics)
• Charge nurse present on every shift who carries an assignment

• Monitors at main nurses station; no strip-reading required by RNs
• Focus on hourly rounding and bedside shift report

Requirements & Expectations

• Current BLS certification required
• BSN required
• Valid driver's license (used to verify 50-mile radius eligibility)
• Cannot be full-time, part-time, or PRN at any CommonSpirit facility
• No artificial nails in patient care areas
• Navy blue scrubs

Orientation

One week classroom orientation followed by one 12-hour shift on the unit. Friday during orientation includes a pass/fail competency exam (open book, resources provided); 90% passing score required.

Floating

First to float within scope as needed.
