Stepdown/Telemetry Nurse – 18-Week Travel Contract
Location: Birmingham, AL
Shift: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
Schedule: 36 hours/week, 3×12 (every other weekend and select holidays)
Duration: 18 weeks
Start Date: October 5, 2026
About the Role
The facility's stepdown unit (SDU) cares for moderate-acuity patients transitioning from ICU or at risk of clinical deterioration. You'll provide skilled nursing to patients requiring closer monitoring than a typical med-surg unit but not full ICU-level care.
Key Responsibilities
- Continuously monitor cardiac rhythms and vital signs; identify and respond to changes in patient condition
- Administer medications, including select IV drips, per physician orders
- Manage a typical patient load of 3–4 patients
- Collaborate with physicians, intensivists, and the interdisciplinary team on plans of care
- Respond to rapid response and code interventions as needed
- Educate patients and families on condition, treatment, and recovery
- Document assessments, interventions, and patient response accurately
- Maintain infection control and fall prevention protocols
Requirements
- Active RN license (state or compact license as applicable)
- BSN preferred; ADN accepted per facility policy
- BLS and ACLS certification required
- Minimum 2 years' experience in stepdown/telemetry nursing
- Prior travel nursing experience required
- PCCN (Progressive Care Certified Nurse) preferred
- Experience with telemetry monitoring and moderate-acuity patient management
