NICU RN – Surgical Focus

Contract Duration: 13–18 weeks

Shift: 3x12-hour rotating days/nights (07:00–19:00 or 19:00–07:00)

About the Role

The facility's surgical NICU cares for neonates from 22 weeks gestation through infancy, managing high-acuity post-operative and critical care patients. You'll provide direct care to infants recovering from major surgeries including gastroschisis repair, omphalocele closure, abdominal procedures, myelomeningoceles, and tracheostomy placements. Common diagnoses include HIE with therapeutic cooling, congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and respiratory distress/failure.

Your Responsibilities

  • Manage ventilated patients (oscillator, conventional, CPAP) and specialty gas delivery
  • Care for central lines (PICC, Broviac, UAC/UVC), PAL lines, and complex drip management
  • Perform tracheostomy and gastrostomy tube care and maintenance
  • Provide pre- and post-operative care for surgical neonates
  • Float to PICU and CVICU as needed within your scope of practice
  • Float to satellite NICU locations (mileage reimbursed)

Requirements

  • 2 years NICU Level 4 experience required (or strong Level 3 surgical experience—must detail surgical background in application)
  • California RN license (pending license accepted with ETA)
  • BLS, Advanced NRP (PALS preferred)
  • Comfortable with weekend flexibility; no specific minimum required but must be available when scheduled
  • Maximum 6 days RTO; must work 2 of 3 holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's)
  • Own transportation required
