Stepdown (SDU) Nurse – 7 PM–7 AM

Location: Birmingham, AL

Contract Duration: 16 weeks

About the Role

The facility is seeking an experienced RN for its stepdown unit. You'll care for moderate-acuity patients transitioning from ICU or at risk of deterioration—those requiring closer monitoring than a medical-surgical unit but not intensive care. This is a night shift position with a typical patient load of 3–4 patients per assignment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Continuously monitor cardiac rhythms and vital signs; identify and respond promptly to changes in patient condition
  • Administer medications, including IV drips, per physician orders
  • Assess and manage patients at risk of clinical decline
  • Respond to rapid response and code interventions as needed
  • Collaborate with physicians, intensivists, and the care team on the plan of care
  • Educate patients and families about their condition, treatment, and recovery
  • Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the electronic health record
  • Maintain infection control and fall prevention protocols

Requirements

  • Active RN license in Alabama (or compact license)
  • 2+ years of recent stepdown or telemetry experience required
  • BLS and ACLS certification (required)
  • BSN preferred; ADN accepted per facility policy
  • PCCN certification preferred
  • Travel nursing experience required
  • Experience with telemetry monitoring and moderate-acuity patient care
