Progressive Care Unit (PCU) — Night Shift

Position Overview

The facility is seeking an experienced RN for its Progressive Care Unit on a 13-week contract. This is a night shift role (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM) working three 12-hour shifts per week with every-other-weekend requirements.

Clinical Scope

You'll care for patients requiring intermediate-level monitoring and intervention. The unit manages post-cardiac catheterization patients, stroke patients, and those requiring close hemodynamic monitoring. Common procedures include peritoneal dialysis, thoracentesis, paracentesis, chest tube insertions, NG/Dobhoff tube placements, and central line dressing changes. You'll troubleshoot wound vacs and manage a range of oxygen delivery systems including BiPAPs and high-flow oxygen.

Required Skills & Certifications

  • BLS and ACLS required
  • EKG rhythm interpretation and cardiac strip competency
  • Proficiency with cardiac drips, insulin drips, and heparin drips
  • Strong critical thinking and IV skills
  • Peritoneal dialysis experience preferred
  • Tube feeding and enteral access experience preferred

Scheduling & Support

Patient ratios are 1:5–1:6 on nights. You'll have tech support to assist with patient care. The unit practices self-scheduling on a 4-week cycle. Floating to other progressive care or medical-surgical units may occur.

The PCU is known for strong teamwork and a family-like care approach. Many travel nurses extend beyond their initial assignment.
