Stepdown Unit – RN
Location: Birmingham, AL
Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM (36 hours/week, 3×12)
Contract Duration: 18 weeks
Schedule: Every other weekend and select holidays
About the Role
Join the stepdown unit, where you'll provide skilled nursing care to patients transitioning from ICU or those at risk of clinical deterioration. You'll manage moderate-acuity patients requiring closer monitoring than med-surg but not ICU-level intervention—typically 3–4 patients per shift.
Key Responsibilities
- Continuously monitor cardiac rhythms and vital signs; identify and respond to condition changes
- Administer medications, including select IV drips, per physician orders
- Assess and manage patients post-ICU or at high risk of decline
- Respond to rapid response and code interventions as needed
- Collaborate with physicians, intensivists, and the interdisciplinary care team
- Educate patients and families on condition, treatment, and recovery
- Document assessments, interventions, and patient response accurately in the EMR
- Maintain infection control and fall prevention protocols
Requirements
- Active RN license in state of practice (or compact license as applicable)
- Minimum 2 years' specialty experience + prior travel nursing experience
- BLS and ACLS certification required
- 1+ years of stepdown/telemetry experience
- Experience with telemetry monitoring and moderate-acuity patient management
- BSN preferred; ADN accepted per facility policy
- PCCN (Progressive Care Certified Nurse) preferred
