PCU – Cardiovascular Progressive Care | Asheville, NC

Day Shift | 13-Week Contract | Start: September 21, 2026

This Cardiovascular Progressive Care unit specializes in post-operative care for cardiac and vascular surgery patients, including those recovering from open heart surgery (CABG, valve replacements, TAVR, Bentall procedures), thoracic surgeries (lobectomy, thoracotomy), esophagogastrectomy, AAA repair, fem-pop bypass, and carotid endarterectomies. The unit also receives overflow medical cardiology patients presenting with heart failure, DKA, chest pain, sepsis, and heart block.

Shift Details

  • Days: 6:45 AM – 7:15 PM
  • 36 guaranteed hours per week
  • Minimum 6 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday) per 6-week schedule period
  • Holiday flexibility required; no on-call obligation

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Epidural and chest tube management
  • Cardiac drip management (phenylephrine, dobutamine, dopamine, milrinone, amiodarone, heparin, nitroglycerin, and more)
  • IV insulin/glucommander protocol
  • Tube feeding management
  • Continuous telemetry monitoring and hemodynamic assessment

Float Requirements

Travelers may float to other stepdown or medical-surgical units, or an inpatient ED holding area.

Required Qualifications

  • Active RN license (NC or compact)
  • BLS and ACLS required
  • Minimum 1 year of PCU/stepdown experience — *required, non-negotiable*
  • Telemetry experience required
  • Prior CV surgery or vascular surgery population experience preferred (within the past year)
  • CVICU background a plus; PCCN preferred

Dress Code: All navy, white tops/navy bottoms, or all white scrubs
