NICU Nurse – 7 PM–7 AM | Salem, VA
About the Role
The facility's NICU cares for critically ill and premature infants requiring intensive monitoring and respiratory support. You'll provide direct nursing care to neonates on ventilators, CPAP, and other advanced life support equipment. This is a newly opened unit with modern equipment and strong collaborative relationships with neonatologists.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, monitor, and respond to rapid changes in neonatal condition
- Manage ventilators, CPAP systems, umbilical lines, and thermoregulation
- Perform newborn resuscitation, intubation, umbilical line placement, surfactant administration, and needle decompression
- Administer medications and titratable drips with precise neonatal dosing
- Support family-centered care, including kangaroo care and breastfeeding support
- Collaborate with neonatologists and interdisciplinary teams on care plans
- Document accurately in the electronic health record
Requirements
- Active RN license (state or compact)
- BLS and NRP certification required; RNC-NIC preferred
- 1+ years NICU experience
- Strong assessment skills; ability to work independently
- Proficiency with IV insertion in preterm and term infants
- Knowledge of signs of clinical decline in premature infants
Schedule & Details
- 3 twelve-hour shifts per week (nights: 7 PM–7 AM)
- 4 weekend shifts per 4-week cycle
- 13-week contract with block scheduling available
- 36 guaranteed hours per week
- Patient ratios: 1:2–3
- Hospital-provided scrubs
