Progressive Care Unit (PCU) – RN
Location: Council Bluffs, IA
Shift: 12-hour nights (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract: 13 weeks
Start Date: September 14, 2026
Guaranteed Hours: 36 per week
About the Role
Join a fast-paced progressive care unit managing patients transitioning from ICU or at risk of clinical deterioration. You'll provide skilled nursing care to moderate-acuity patients with conditions including heart failure, atrial fibrillation, respiratory distress, and stroke. This is a team-oriented environment with steady admits and discharges.
What You'll Do
- Monitor cardiac rhythms and vital signs continuously; read and interpret telemetry strips independently
- Titrate IV drips (Cardizem, amiodarone, nitroprusside) per physician orders
- Assess and respond to changes in patient condition; participate in rapid responses and codes as needed
- Manage 4 patients per shift with nursing aide and telemetry technician support
- Collaborate with the charge nurse (who carries a full assignment), physicians, and the care team
- Educate patients and families on condition, treatment, and recovery
- Document assessments and interventions accurately in the EMR
Requirements
- Active RN license (state or compact)
- BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 1 year PCU/step-down experience
- Experience with telemetry monitoring and moderate-acuity patient management
- Valid driver's license
Additional Details
- Every-other-weekend schedule; cyclic scheduling
- 1 major, 1 minor holiday per year
- May float to ICU if clinically appropriate and experienced
- Orientation: 1 shift in department
- Skills assessment exam (open-book, 90% required to pass) during orientation
- Artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas
- Successful candidates must reside within 50 miles of the facility
